How we work, and why

About Meridian Plumbing

Four trades under one roof, diagnosis before quoting, and prices agreed before anything starts. Everything else on this page is detail about those three things.

Three commitments, and what they actually mean

What we commit to

We diagnose before we quote. That means measuring where measurement is what settles the question, and putting a camera down a drain that has blocked twice rather than clearing it again.

You approve the price before work starts. The number does not change afterwards, and if we find a second problem you hear about it before we act on it.

We tell you when something is not worth doing. Including when a repair beats the replacement we could have sold you, and when your water does not need the softener you were considering.

Most of the calls we get have been looked at before, and the pattern is remarkably consistent: a symptom was treated rather than a cause found.

A hydronic relief valve replaced twice when the actual fault was a failed expansion tank. Refrigerant added to a system with a leak, then added again the following summer. A drain cleared for the third time in a year when twenty minutes with a camera would have shown roots entering at a joint. A furnace condemned for a cracked heat exchanger without anyone showing the homeowner the crack.

None of those are dishonest, necessarily. They are what happens when diagnosis is treated as overhead rather than as the work. But the homeowner pays repeatedly for the same problem, and eventually concludes that trades cannot be trusted.

Spending an extra twenty minutes finding out what is actually happening costs a little more on the day and considerably less over a year. That is the whole philosophy.

Why four trades

The jobs that fall between contractors

Covering plumbing, heating, cooling and electrical is not about being bigger. It is about the jobs that genuinely need two of them.

The jobTrades involvedWhat goes wrong when they are split
Standby generatorGas and electricalThe gas contractor sizes for the meter, the electrician sizes for the panel, and neither owns the whole load calculation
Tankless water heaterPlumbing and gasInstalled on an existing gas line that cannot deliver full output, then blamed on the equipment
Heat pump or dual fuelHVAC and electricalEquipment specified before anyone confirms the electrical service can carry it
Outdoor kitchenGas and electricalTwo trenches, two schedules, two mobilisations, twice the disruption
Combi boilerHeating and water treatmentA heating fault that is really a hard water problem, diagnosed by someone who does not do water
EV chargerElectrical, sometimes panel workA service upgrade quoted before anyone runs a load calculation

In every one of these, the failure mode is the same: nobody owns the whole problem, so each contractor solves their part correctly and the result still underperforms.

Local knowledge

Why the Treasure Valley specifically

Treasure Valley Idaho homes affected by local water, climate and housing conditions
Local conditions here are specific enough that generic technique produces generic results.

Local knowledge in this trade is not a marketing line. It is the difference between diagnosing something in ten minutes and not diagnosing it at all.

Hard water. City of Meridian water averages about 7 grains per gallon, with independent testing putting parts of the system closer to 8.4 grains per gallon. Knowing that means recognising that a toilet which has started blocking after ten trouble-free years probably has scaled rim jets rather than a blocked line.

Seasonal groundwater. Knowing that irrigation recharge raises the shallow water table from spring means recognising that a crawl space wet in June and dry in January is not a plumbing leak, which saves a homeowner from paying to look for one.

Elevation. Knowing that gas appliances above roughly 2,000 feet need high-altitude provisions applied means checking that on equipment we did not install, rather than chasing a combustion problem in circles.

Housing eras. Knowing that polybutylene was installed here between roughly 1978 and 1995, and galvanized before about 1960, means the age of a house narrows the diagnosis before anyone opens anything.

None of this is exotic. It is just specific, and specific is what generic technique misses.

Standards

Licensing, code and permits

An Idaho journeyman plumber has to log 8,000 hours of supervised work plus 576 classroom hours before sitting the state exam, and a plumbing contractor licence additionally requires journeyman experience and a compliance bond.

Idaho enforces the Uniform Plumbing Code rather than the International Plumbing Code, and the electrical side runs on the National Electrical Code, both administered through the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses.

We pull permits wherever the work requires them and schedule the inspections, with fees passed through at cost. That is not enthusiasm for paperwork. Unpermitted work causes genuine problems at the point of sale, can affect insurance claims, and removes the independent check that the installation was actually done correctly.

Where a job involves gas, every line we install or repair is pressure tested before it goes into service. Where a job involves combustion, the heat exchanger is inspected and the draft verified. Those are not upsells and they are not optional.

What we will not do

Some things we would rather be clear about

  • We will not quote a firm price over the phone for work we have not seenThat number would be invented, and you would find out when the technician arrived.
  • We will not add refrigerant and call it a repairA sealed system does not consume refrigerant. Low charge means a leak, and the leak is the job.
  • We will not condemn a heat exchanger without showing youIt is one of the most common ways people are sold furnaces they did not need.
  • We will not jet a pipe we have not looked insideHigh pressure water in a cracked line turns a repair into a replacement.
  • We will not sell water treatment before testing the waterIn Nampa in particular, the answer is sometimes that you do not need a softener.
  • We will not fit a larger breaker to stop nuisance trippingA breaker protects the wire. A bigger one removes that protection from a conductor that cannot carry it.
  • We will not publish fake reviews or invented statisticsEvery number on this site carries a link to where it came from.
  • We will not promise a response window we cannot meetMountain Home is a scheduled call, and we say so rather than disappointing you.

The pages people reach for most are water heater repair and installation, drain cleaning, air conditioning repair and furnace repair and maintenance. If hard water is behind your problem, which it often is in this valley, start with water softener installation. For anything electrical, breaker panel upgrades is usually where the diagnosis begins.

Questions we get asked

Frequently asked questions

How does your pricing work?

We diagnose first, give you the price, and you decide. Nothing proceeds until you have approved the cost, and the number does not change afterwards. If we find a second problem while working, we tell you before doing anything about it rather than adding it to the bill. We do not quote firm prices over the phone for work we have not seen, because that figure would be guesswork and you would discover the real one when the technician arrived.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Idaho licenses plumbers and electricians through the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, and the requirements are substantial: a journeyman plumber has to log 8,000 hours of supervised work plus 576 classroom hours before sitting the state exam, and a contractor licence requires journeyman experience plus a compliance bond on top of that. Plumbing work here follows the Uniform Plumbing Code and electrical work follows the National Electrical Code.

Why do you cover four trades instead of specialising?

Because a surprising number of jobs sit across two of them, and when those are split between contractors nobody owns the whole problem. A standby generator needs a load calculation covering both the gas supply and the electrical service. A tankless water heater frequently needs the gas line upsized. A combi boiler fault is often really a hard water problem. Each contractor solves their part correctly and the result still underperforms. One company removes that gap.

Do you use subcontractors?

The point of covering four trades in one company is that the work stays with our own licensed technicians. That matters most on jobs crossing trades, where the coordination problem is exactly what we are trying to remove. If a job ever needed something genuinely outside our scope, we would tell you that rather than taking it on.

What areas do you cover?

Meridian, Boise, Nampa, Caldwell, Eagle, Kuna, Star, Middleton and Mountain Home, spanning Ada, Canyon and Elmore counties. Each town has its own page covering the local conditions that actually change the work there. Mountain Home is the furthest point we cover, so it is scheduled rather than treated as a same-hour call, and we say that up front rather than after.

Why does your site not have customer reviews on it?

Because we are not going to write them ourselves, and we would rather have nothing than something invented. The same applies to statistics: every number on this site, on water hardness, housing age, climate and licensing, links to the source it came from. If you want to know whether we are any good, the more useful test is whether the explanations on our service pages are accurate and specific enough to be worth something even if you never call us.

What happens if something goes wrong after you leave?

Get in touch and we will come back. Beyond that, the more useful thing we do is explain what caused the problem and what would prevent a repeat, because a job that is genuinely finished should not need us again for the same thing. If a repair does not hold, that is a diagnosis we got wrong, and we would rather find that out and correct it than have you call someone else.
