Why do kitchen faucets fail so quickly in the Treasure Valley?
Because of mineral content. A kitchen faucet’s ceramic cartridge relies on two polished discs sealing against each other. Hard water leaves deposits on those surfaces, and every quarter turn grinds the deposits against the seal. That is why a faucet that should last fifteen years starts dripping in five.
The good news is that a drip is usually a cartridge replacement rather than a new faucet. Aerators clogging up, sprayers losing pressure and handles getting stiff all trace back to the same cause and all have straightforward fixes. Persistent, repeated failures across every fixture in the house are the signal that the water itself is worth treating.
A modern kitchen packs more plumbing connections into one cabinet than anywhere else in the house. There is the faucet supply and its cartridge, the sink drain and trap, a garbage disposal with its own drain path, a dishwasher drain that must be routed correctly, a hot and cold shutoff for each supply, often a filtered water tap, and a refrigerator ice maker line running somewhere behind the cabinets.
Most of what goes wrong is in one of those connections. Slow draining in a kitchen is almost always grease and food solids narrowing the line rather than a single obstruction. Leaks under the sink are usually a trap washer, a loose slip joint, a failed supply connector or the disposal’s sink flange seal. Water backing up into the sink when the dishwasher runs is a drain routing problem.
That last one is worth expanding on, because it is the single most common defect we find in kitchens. A dishwasher drain hose has to be protected against wastewater siphoning back into the machine, either with an air gap fitting on the counter or by looping the hose up to the underside of the countertop and securing it there. When that loop is missing or has slipped down, sink water flows straight back toward the dishwasher.

Some of these are quick fixes and some are early warnings. All of them get worse if they are left.
- Water pooling in the base cabinetEven a slow leak will destroy particleboard cabinet floors and can reach the subfloor. Find it early and it is a washer; find it late and it is cabinetry.
- The sink drains slowly or gurglesGrease and food solids narrowing the line, or a venting issue if it gurgles when other fixtures drain.
- The disposal hums but does not turnUsually a jam. There is a hex key slot on the underside for this, and a reset button. If neither frees it, the motor may be finished.
- Dirty water comes back up when the dishwasher drainsA missing or dropped drain loop, or a missing air gap. This is a code detail with a real hygiene consequence.
- The faucet drips, or the handle is stiffNearly always a cartridge, and nearly always fixable without replacing the whole faucet.

Island sinks in particular need careful venting because there is no wall to run a vent up. Getting this wrong produces a kitchen that gurgles and drains slowly forever.

City of Meridian water averages about 7 grains per gallon, with independent testing putting parts of the system closer to 8.4 grains per gallon. You see the consequences in the kitchen faster than anywhere else, because it is the room where water is used most and where the fixtures have the finest tolerances.
Three effects show up repeatedly. Aerators and sprayer heads clog with mineral debris, which homeowners read as low water pressure. Faucet cartridges wear early, which shows up as drips and stiff handles. And glassware comes out of the dishwasher with a permanent cloudy film, which is etching and mineral deposit rather than a detergent problem.
Meridian has grown more than 260 percent from its year-2000 population and is now Idaho’s second largest city, with about 60 percent of its housing units built after 2000. That matters here too, because a very large share of Meridian kitchens were fitted with the same generation of builder-grade fixtures at the same time, and they are reaching the end of their service life together.

Why does my kitchen sink back up when the dishwasher runs?
Almost always a drain routing problem. The dishwasher drain hose needs either an air gap fitting on the countertop or a high loop, where the hose is secured up against the underside of the counter before it drops to the disposal or drain. That loop is what stops sink wastewater from flowing back toward the dishwasher. Over time the strap holding it can slip, and once the hose sags the protection is gone. It is a quick correction.
My garbage disposal just hums. What does that mean?
The motor is getting power but the impeller cannot turn, which means something is jammed. There is a hex key slot on the underside of the unit that lets you rock the impeller free manually, and a small reset button that pops out when the motor overheats. Try the hex key first, then the reset. If it still will not turn, the motor or bearing has likely failed and the unit needs replacing. Never put your hand into a disposal, even with the power off at the switch.
How much does it cost to replace a kitchen faucet?
It depends on whether you are supplying the faucet, what condition the existing shutoff valves are in, and how accessible the connections are behind the sink. Corroded shutoffs that will not close are common in older homes and add to the job because they have to be replaced before the faucet can be changed. We quote the whole job before starting so the number does not move.
Can you install a faucet I bought myself?
Yes. We install customer-supplied fixtures regularly. What we will do is check it before we start, because the two things that go wrong are missing parts in the box and a faucet whose base does not match the hole configuration in your sink. Finding that out before the old faucet comes off saves you a day without a kitchen sink.
Why is my kitchen water pressure low but the rest of the house is fine?
Start with the aerator, the small screen that screws into the tip of the spout. It catches mineral debris and it is the most common cause by a wide margin. Unscrew it by hand, rinse it, and see if flow returns. If the aerator is clear, the next suspects are a clogged pull-out sprayer head, a partially closed shutoff valve under the sink, or a failing cartridge inside the faucet.
Do you do plumbing for kitchen remodels?
Yes, both the rough-in and the final set. If you are moving the sink or adding an island, the drain and vent have to move with it, and Idaho enforces the Uniform Plumbing Code, which has specific requirements for island venting where there is no wall to run a vent up. It is worth involving us at the design stage rather than after the cabinets are ordered, because sink placement is much cheaper to change on a drawing.
Why does my kitchen drain keep clogging?
Grease is almost always the answer. It goes down warm and liquid, then cools and coats the inside of the horizontal pipe, and food solids stick to it. Over months the effective diameter of the line shrinks. Clearing it restores flow, but if it recurs quickly the line may need proper cleaning rather than just clearing, and in older homes a corroded or bellied section can be the underlying cause.
