Carbon monoxide is a product of incomplete combustion. Any appliance that burns a fuel can produce it: gas furnaces, water heaters, boilers, gas fireplaces, gas ranges and dryers, plus anything running on propane, oil or wood.
When these appliances are working correctly and venting properly, combustion products go outside and nothing enters your living space. Problems arise in three ways.
A cracked heat exchanger is the one people know about. The heat exchanger separates combustion gases from the air circulating through your house. When it cracks, those two streams can mix, and the furnace blower then distributes combustion products through every room.
Venting failures are at least as common and get far less attention. A blocked flue, a disconnected vent pipe, a bird’s nest in a chimney, or a vent that has corroded through all allow combustion products to spill into the building rather than leaving it.
Poor combustion itself produces elevated carbon monoxide even when venting is intact. A dirty burner, inadequate combustion air, or an appliance not set up correctly for the altitude all cause it. That last one is a genuine local consideration, because gas equipment at Treasure Valley elevation needs the manufacturer’s high-altitude provisions applied.

The important distinction: an alarm tells you CO has already reached the room. Combustion analysis tells you the appliance is producing it before it gets that far.
Combustion analysis is the core of the test. A calibrated analyser probe is placed in the flue while the appliance runs, and it measures what is actually in the exhaust: carbon monoxide levels, oxygen, carbon dioxide, flue temperature and combustion efficiency. Three local factors combine in a way that makes combustion safety more consequential in this valley than in many places.
Winter inversions. The Treasure Valley sits under temperature inversions through much of the winter, which traps carbon monoxide and fine particulates close to the ground. An inversion puts a lid on the valley, and the same conditions that concentrate pollutants outdoors also mean less natural air movement around buildings, which does nothing to help an appliance already struggling to vent.
Elevation. The valley sits at meaningful altitude, and thinner air changes the air-to-fuel ratio in gas combustion. Equipment installed above roughly 2,000 feet generally needs the manufacturer’s high-altitude provisions applied. When that step is missed, one of the consequences is incomplete combustion and elevated carbon monoxide production. This is why heat exchanger inspection is the central item on any gas furnace maintenance visit. Does high altitude affect carbon monoxide production?
It can, if the appliance was not set up for it. Air is thinner at elevation, which changes the air-to-fuel ratio in gas combustion. Manufacturers publish high-altitude instructions for equipment installed above roughly 2,000 feet, which can include derating and orifice changes. The Treasure Valley sits well into that range. When the high-altitude provisions are applied correctly there is no issue at all. My CO alarm chirps occasionally. Is that carbon monoxide?
Almost certainly not. An intermittent chirp, usually one beep every minute or so, is the standard low battery or end-of-life signal. A genuine carbon monoxide alarm is a loud, insistent, repeating pattern that is impossible to mistake for a chirp. Replace the battery first, and if the chirping continues, check the manufacture date on the back, because the unit has likely reached the end of its service life and needs replacing entirely.
Is it safe to run a generator in my garage?
No, and this is one of the most common ways people are seriously harmed by carbon monoxide. A generator produces very large quantities of it, and an attached garage is not sufficiently ventilated even with the door open. The same applies to running a vehicle to warm it up in an attached garage, and to using barbecues or camp stoves indoors. Generators must be run well away from the building, with the exhaust directed away from doors, windows and vents. If you are considering backup power, a properly installed standby generator is permanently sited outside and removes this risk entirely.
