Do Treasure Valley homes really need sump pumps?
Many do, and the reason surprises people who assume Idaho is too dry for groundwater problems. The Treasure Valley sits on an extensively irrigated landscape, and when the canals and laterals charge up for the growing season, the shallow water table across large parts of Ada and Canyon county rises with them.
That is why homeowners here often see a dry crawl space all winter and standing water in June. It is not a roof leak or a plumbing leak. It is seasonal groundwater, and a sump pump with a properly routed discharge is the standard answer.
When a sump pump fails to run, the pump motor is the least likely culprit. In order of how often we find them, the real causes are the switch, the check valve, the discharge line and the pit itself.
The float switch is the most common failure by a wide margin. Tethered floats hang up on the pit wall or on the power cord. Vertical floats stick on their rod. Either way the motor never gets the signal, and the pump sits there in perfect working order while the crawl space floods.
The check valve sits in the discharge line and stops water in the pipe from draining back into the pit when the pump shuts off. When it fails, that column of water returns every cycle, the float rises again, and the pump short cycles itself to death.
The discharge line is the one that catches people out in Idaho. If it terminates too close to the foundation, the water you just pumped out soaks straight back down to the pit. If the outdoor end freezes shut in December, the pump runs against a closed pipe until the motor overheats.
The pit matters too. A pit with no lid fills with debris, and a pit that is too small forces the pump to cycle constantly.

A sump pump failure is only discovered when water is already on the floor unless you go looking. These are the things to look for.
- It runs constantly, or cycles every minuteUsually a failed check valve letting water fall back into the pit, or a pit sized too small for the inflow.
- It hums but does not pumpA jammed or seized impeller, often from grit and debris in an uncovered pit.
- It does not start when the pit fillsAlmost always the float switch. Pour a bucket of water in and watch what happens.
- Water in the crawl space despite the pump workingThe discharge is likely returning water too close to the foundation, or the line is blocked.
- Visible rust or a grinding noiseBearing wear. A pump making new noises is usually within a season of failing.

That is the only way to see whether the float actually triggers, whether the check valve holds, whether the discharge flows freely and how long the pump takes to clear the pit. A pump that spins when you plug it in has told you almost nothing.
On a replacement, sizing is by how much water actually arrives during your worst week, not by matching the horsepower of whatever was there. An oversized pump short cycles and wears out early. An undersized one never keeps up.

This valley is farmed and irrigated at a scale that directly affects residential groundwater. Canals, laterals and flood irrigation recharge the shallow aquifer through the growing season, and in subdivisions built on former farmland, that recharge shows up as a water table that climbs from roughly April onward.
The practical consequence is a seasonal pattern most homeowners here recognise. The crawl space is bone dry through winter, then damp in late spring, then wet. It looks like a plumbing leak and is usually not one.

Why does my crawl space only flood in the summer?

How long do sump pumps last?
Seven to ten years is the normal range. How hard yours works matters more than its age. A pump that cycles a few times a week will outlast one that runs several times an hour every spring. Once a pump is in that age bracket, the sensible approach is to replace it on your schedule rather than discover it has failed when the crawl space is already wet.
How do I test my sump pump?
Pour a bucket of water slowly into the pit and watch. The float should rise, the pump should start, the water should clear, and the pump should shut off cleanly without immediately restarting. If it restarts straight away, the check valve is letting water fall back down the discharge pipe. If nothing happens at all, the float switch is the first suspect. Do this once a year, before irrigation season.
Do I need a battery backup sump pump?
If a flooded crawl space or basement would cost you real money, yes. The argument is simple: the weather events most likely to overwhelm a sump pit are the same events most likely to knock out power, and a mains-powered pump is useless in an outage. A backup system also covers you if the primary pump itself fails, which is the other half of the risk.
Why does my sump pump run constantly?
The most common cause is a failed check valve. Every time the pump shuts off, the water sitting in the discharge pipe drains straight back into the pit, the float rises again, and the cycle repeats. It is a cheap part and an easy fix, but left alone the constant cycling will burn out the pump. Other causes are a pit that is too small for the inflow, a stuck float, or a genuinely high water table.
Where should a sump pump discharge to?
Far enough from the house that the water does not simply percolate back down to the pit, and somewhere it will not create a problem for you or a neighbour. Discharging right at the foundation is self-defeating. In Idaho there is a second consideration: the outdoor termination needs to be arranged so it cannot freeze shut over winter, because a blocked discharge leaves the pump running against a closed pipe until it overheats.
Can a sump pump be installed in a crawl space?
Yes, and in this valley crawl space installations are at least as common as basement ones. The work involves excavating for the basin, setting it at the low point where water collects, and running power and a discharge line. Access is usually the factor that determines how long it takes.
