Why does the same drain keep clogging?
Because clearing a clog and cleaning a drain are not the same thing. Punching a hole through a blockage restores flow immediately, but it leaves the buildup coating the pipe walls, so the line narrows again from the same starting point.
A drain that blocks repeatedly is telling you something. The usual causes are grease coating a kitchen line, tree roots entering a sewer lateral through a joint, a belly or sag where the pipe has settled and holds water, or scale and corrosion inside old cast iron. Each of those needs a different answer, and a camera tells you which one you have.
The first question on any drain call is whether one fixture is affected or several, because that single fact tells you roughly where the blockage sits.
One fixture draining slowly means the problem is in that fixture’s own branch line. A bathroom sink is almost always hair and soap in the trap or just past it. A kitchen sink is almost always grease. A shower is hair. These are localised and straightforward.
Several fixtures affected at once, or the lowest fixtures in the house backing up, means the blockage is in the main line that everything drains into. That is a different job with a different urgency, because there is nowhere for the water to go and the lowest drain in the house becomes the overflow point.
Gurgling is worth listening for. When a drain gurgles as another fixture empties, air is being pulled through the trap because the system cannot vent properly, either because the vent is blocked or because a partial blockage downstream is restricting flow.
Kitchen lines are the ones we clear most, and grease is the reason. It goes down warm and liquid, cools within a few feet, and coats the inside of the horizontal pipe. Food particles stick to the coating, and the effective diameter shrinks month by month until something finally stops it.

On a first-time clog, clearing it is usually the whole job. On a repeat offender, it is only the start.
Cabling is the standard approach for most blockages. A motorised cable is fed into the line with a cutting head sized to the pipe, and it bores through the obstruction. It is fast, effective and the right tool for hair, soap, most food debris and light root intrusion.
Camera inspection is what we reach for when a drain has blocked more than once. A camera fed down the line shows the actual condition of the pipe: whether roots are coming through a joint, whether a section has sagged into a belly that holds standing water, whether the pipe is cracked or offset, or whether it is simply coated in years of grease. It also locates the problem, so if a repair is needed nobody is digging speculatively.
Hydro jetting is the step up from cabling. High pressure water scours the full inside diameter of the pipe rather than punching a hole through the middle, which is what actually removes grease coating and restores the line to its original bore. It is the right answer for kitchen and restaurant lines and for heavy buildup, but it is not right for every pipe, and we camera first to make sure the line can take it.

Meridian has grown more than 260 percent from its year-2000 population and is now Idaho’s second largest city, with about 60 percent of its housing units built after 2000. Newer Meridian, Eagle, Star and Kuna homes have modern ABS or PVC drainage, which is smooth-walled and does not corrode. Blockages in these houses are almost always about what has gone down them: grease, wipes, and the assumption that a garbage disposal means food can go anywhere.
Older neighbourhoods are a different story. Nampa’s median home construction year sits right around 2000, but roughly one in ten houses there predates 1950, which puts two very different plumbing eras inside the same city limits. The same is true of the older parts of Boise and Caldwell. Homes from before the 1970s often still have cast iron drainage inside and clay or cast iron laterals outside. Cast iron corrodes from the inside, developing a rough scaled surface that catches everything passing through it, and clay laterals have jointed sections that mature tree roots find and enter.

How much does drain cleaning cost in Meridian?

Are chemical drain cleaners safe to use?
We would not recommend them. On a fully blocked drain the chemical sits in the standing water and rarely clears the obstruction, but it does create a caustic hazard for whoever opens the line next, including us. Repeated use can damage older pipes, and on cast iron it accelerates corrosion. If a drain is slow rather than blocked, hot water and a physical cleaning are safer and usually more effective.
Why does my drain keep clogging after being cleared?
Because clearing and cleaning are different things. A cable bores a hole through the blockage and flow returns immediately, but the buildup coating the pipe wall is still there, so the line narrows again from the same starting point. If a drain has blocked more than once, the right next step is a camera inspection to find out whether you are dealing with grease buildup, tree roots at a joint, a sagging section holding water, or a pipe that has genuinely failed.
Can tree roots really get into my sewer line?
Yes, and it is one of the most common causes of recurring main line blockages in the older parts of Boise, Nampa and Caldwell. Roots are drawn to moisture and will find their way in through a joint or a small crack, then grow inside the pipe where conditions are ideal. Older clay and cast iron laterals with jointed sections are the most vulnerable. Cutting the roots restores flow, but they grow back unless the entry point is addressed.
What is the difference between drain cleaning and hydro jetting?
Cabling uses a rotating cable with a cutting head to bore through a blockage. It restores flow quickly and is the right tool for most one-off clogs. Hydro jetting uses high pressure water to scour the entire inside diameter of the pipe, which removes the grease and scale coating that cabling leaves behind. Jetting costs more and does far more, and it is the right answer for kitchen lines and recurring blockages. We inspect with a camera before jetting a line we have not seen inside.
Can I put anything down a garbage disposal?
No, and this is behind a lot of the kitchen drain calls we get. Disposals grind food, but the ground material still has to travel down a pipe that grease is already narrowing. Fibrous items such as celery and onion skins, starchy items such as pasta and rice which swell, coffee grounds which pack together, and grease of any kind are the main offenders. Running plenty of cold water while the disposal is on helps considerably.
