The three pipe materials that fail, and how to identify them
When does a house actually need repiping?
When the pipe material itself has reached the end of its life, rather than when a particular joint has failed. Three situations make that call straightforward:
Galvanized steel, used in homes built before roughly 1960, corrodes from the inside. The bore narrows with rust until pressure drops noticeably, and the rust is what turns your water brown. It cannot be reversed.
Polybutylene, installed widely between the late 1970s and mid 1990s, is grey plastic pipe that degrades from the inside and fails without warning. If you have it, replacement is a matter of when.
Copper with recurring pinhole leaks. One pinhole is a repair. A third pinhole in two years means the whole run is going.
You can usually tell what you have by looking at an exposed run in a crawl space, garage or under a sink.
Galvanized steel looks like grey metal pipe with threaded joints. It was standard until around 1960 and is still present in older parts of Boise, Nampa and Caldwell. Inside, it rusts progressively, and the rust builds inward until the effective diameter is a fraction of what it should be. The symptoms are a steady decline in pressure over years, brown or rusty water especially first thing in the morning, and eventually leaks at the threaded joints where the wall is thinnest.
Polybutylene is grey, sometimes blue or black, flexible plastic pipe with either metal or plastic fittings, typically stamped PB2110. It was installed extensively between about 1978 and 1995 across fast-growing areas. It degrades internally through reaction with oxidants in the water supply and becomes brittle, and the characteristic failure is sudden rather than a slow weep.
Copper is the material people assume is permanent, and it usually is. But copper can develop pinhole leaks, driven by water chemistry, velocity in undersized lines, or manufacturing variation in a particular batch. The pattern that matters is repetition. Pinholes tend to arrive in groups because the whole run shares the same conditions.

It is a larger job than most plumbing work, and how it is managed matters as much as the pipe that goes in.
Planning first. We map the existing system, identify every fixture, and design the new layout. A repipe is a chance to correct problems in the original design, such as undersized runs, poor routing through unconditioned spaces, and missing isolation valves.
Minimising the opening up. This is the part homeowners care about most, and it is where experience shows. New lines are routed through attics, crawl spaces and existing cavities wherever possible, so the number of access holes cut in finished walls is kept to the minimum the job actually requires.
Doing it in stages. A well-run repipe does not leave a family without water for days. We typically keep the house in service overnight through each stage of the work.
Making good. Access holes get patched, and we are clear before starting about what level of finish is included and where you may want your own decorator afterwards. Being vague about this is how repipes end badly.
Pressure test and inspection. The new system is tested and, where the jurisdiction requires it, inspected before the walls are closed.

This service area contains two quite distinct housing populations, and repiping is almost entirely a conversation about one of them.
Nampa’s median home construction year sits right around 2000, but roughly one in ten houses there predates 1950, which puts two very different plumbing eras inside the same city limits. That statistic captures the split neatly. Older parts of Nampa, Caldwell and Boise contain genuinely old housing, and pre-1960 homes in those neighbourhoods frequently still carry original galvanized supply lines. Those are the houses where declining pressure and rusty water are a material problem rather than a fixture problem.
The polybutylene era matters here too. It was installed widely from the late 1970s through the mid 1990s, which overlaps directly with a period of substantial building across the valley. If your house dates from that window, it is worth identifying what you have before it identifies itself.
Meridian has grown more than 260 percent from its year-2000 population and is now Idaho’s second largest city, with about 60 percent of its housing units built after 2000. Most Meridian housing sits outside both risk windows, having been built after 2000 with copper or PEX. Those homes rarely need repiping. Where we do see copper pinhole issues, hard water and undersized high-velocity runs are usually the contributing factors, which is another argument for treating the water.

How do I know if my house has polybutylene pipe?
Look at an exposed run in a crawl space, garage, or under a sink. Polybutylene is flexible plastic pipe, usually grey but sometimes blue or black, and it is very often stamped PB2110. It was installed extensively from the late 1970s through the mid 1990s. If your home dates from that window, it is worth checking. Polybutylene degrades internally and tends to fail suddenly rather than weeping first, which is why identifying it before it fails is the whole point.
How long does a whole home repipe take?
For a typical single family home, several days rather than weeks. The rough-in of the new lines is the bulk of the work, followed by changeover, testing and making good. A good repipe is staged so the house keeps water overnight throughout, which we plan around your household. Two storey homes with finished ceilings take longer than single storey homes with accessible crawl spaces.
Is PEX better than copper for repiping?
For most Treasure Valley retrofits, PEX has practical advantages. It is flexible, so it can be routed through existing cavities with far less opening up of finished walls, it has fewer joints and therefore fewer potential leak points, it does not corrode, and it is more forgiving if a line does freeze. Copper is an excellent material with a very long track record and remains the choice for owners who prefer it. Both are good; the trade-offs are practical rather than one being simply better.
How much of my drywall will be damaged during a repipe?
Less than most people expect if the routing is planned properly. New lines go through attics, crawl spaces and existing cavities wherever possible, so access holes are limited to where they are genuinely needed, typically at fixture connections and direction changes. We will tell you before starting roughly how many access points to expect and exactly what standard of making good is included, because leaving that vague is how repipe projects turn into disputes.
Can I repipe just part of my house?
Sometimes, and it can be a sensible staged approach if budget is the constraint, for example doing the hot lines first on a galvanized system since those corrode fastest. But partial repiping has a limitation worth understanding: if the failing material is throughout the house, the sections you leave will keep failing, and you will pay mobilisation costs twice. We will give you an honest view on whether staging makes sense in your specific situation.
Will repiping fix my low water pressure?
If the cause is corroded galvanized pipe narrowing the bore, then yes, dramatically, and that is one of the most satisfying results of a repipe. But low pressure has other causes, including a failing pressure reducing valve, a partially closed main shutoff, a municipal supply issue or a leak somewhere in the system. We diagnose the cause before recommending a repipe, because replacing all the pipe in a house is an expensive way to fix a faulty pressure regulator.
Do I need a permit to repipe my house?
Yes, in the jurisdictions we serve. Repiping is permitted work and is inspected before walls are closed up. Idaho enforces the Uniform Plumbing Code through the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, with individual cities adding their own requirements. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection as part of the project, and permit fees are passed through at cost.
